Great news! In just about a month, we’ll kick off the PIV Badge process, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
PIV Badges are required for permanent employees, joint employees, and postdocs. Foreign nationals in these positions will be eligible after residing in the U.S. for at least three years.
The Ames Lab Badging Project will bring two big changes to the Lab:
Starting in January 2025, everyone is expected to wear and display a badge while in Ames Lab facilities. It will take us at least a year to get all current employees who are eligible their PIV Badges. You can wear whichever badge you have at this time for identification: Ames Lab Badges, PIV Badges, and ISUCards are all okay.
All employees will get either a PIV Badge or an Ames Lab Badge for identification and door access. This is a federal requirement that will help us increase security by better understanding and controlling access to protect research, equipment, and personnel.

Every employee will need either an Ames Lab Badge or PIV Badge.
Yes, get your Ames Lab Badge (if you haven't already)! Stop by 105 TASF, or email us if you prefer to schedule an appointment.
Not yet. Use your ISUCard for door access and to display. If you prefer to display an Ames Lab Badge, obtain one from the Badging Office (you will still need a PIV Badge when it’s your turn). The Badging Office will notify you when it’s time to start the PIV Badge process. We'll share more details about PIV Badges and their process soon, including at a virtual event, before we start issuing PIV Badges.
Display your PIV Badge and keep using your ISUCard for door access. We need to replace our current badge scanners before PIV Badges will work with them. This work is in progress, and we will work with you to transfer door access from your ISUCard to your PIV Badge when it’s time. Here are answers to FAQs if you already have a PIV Badge.
October - December 2024: Current employees not eligible for PIV Badges can come get their Ames Lab Badges anytime
